04 Competitive Analysis

Purpose

We conducted competitive evaluation on 5 other websites to gauge the current market in terms of how easily users can find resources in helping them to both find and host wine tastings. We utilized results from our competitive analysis to better shape the features of our website.

Websites

Results

In general, these web sites listed events that only provided limited information: date, time, place, cost, and occasionally the theme and mood of the tasting. Information about the tasting itself was typically one-sided, written by the event organizer. In addition, they contained little follow-up information for participants or Web viewers, such as wine reviews, places to share experiences and pictures, and so on.

Most sites are either event listings, recommendation sites, or information sites. Few combine these aspects to aid wine tasters in understanding the aspects of a tasting—including logistics, mood, theme, education, the use of an expert guide, community—in choosing a wine tasting that is right for them. In contrast, many sites offered recommendations and services to help people plan to host a tasting. These sites are either information-based or company-service based. The company-service based sites either offer to host the event or will offer their expert advice in preparing for the tasting.
