Purpose
By formulating a list of questions beforehand, we had a better sense of how to drive the conversations we had with each wine taster that we encountered. This allowed us to more easily gather the necessary data to better inform the site design by creating more accurate mental models for potential users of our website.
Questions
General questions to ask everyone:
- When did you start going to tastings?
- Observe how they interact with each other
- Conversation topics
- Overall mood (are they enjoying themselves?)
- How did you decide to come tonight?
- How did you choose this tasting/find out?
- When did you decide to come?
- Do they go to other tastings or wish there were more?
- Expectations
- (if first time) Is it what you expected?
- (not first time) Is it different from other times?
- Have you ever hosted a tasting before?
Questions to ask the novice wine taster:
- What got you interested?
- Do you know anyone here?
- (If not the first time) Why do you keep coming?
- Are you here for the social aspect, to learn, etc?
- How did you hear about the event?
- What types of atmosphere do you like, or have you been to?
- Do you partake in any other wine activities?
- (if in a group) Did you know each other before coming?
Questions to ask the intermediate/expert wine taster
- How long have you been attending?
- If learning is their goal, how do they keep moving forward?
- Classes?
- More tastings (here or elsewhere)?
- From the people they interact with (who are these people?)
- Buying their own wines
- Other reasons?
Questions to ask those with wine hosting experience
- How did you decide to make the move from a taster to having your own business?
- How do you prepare/chose?
- Decide the mood/theme?
- chose the wines?
- chose the location?
- Do you host private, public, or both? Why?
