The Macintosh file system, in List mode.

Help System: Design

The Help system was modeled on the Macintosh's Finder interface, for two reasons:

  • To teach users how to use the Help system.
  • To familiarize users with the Macintosh user interface.

The Help window layout mimics the List view of the Macintosh file system. In this view, shown at right, every folder has a icon. Clicking the displays the contents of that folder.

The Help system, shown below, copies and extends this interface. Clicking a expands the specified item, as in the Finder. Additionally, in the Help system, clicking the name of an item displays descriptive text on the right-hand side. When the Help system first appears, the descriptive text invites the user to click a topic, simultaneously introducing the user to the Help system and familiarizing the user with standard Macintosh behavior.

The Help system window. Clicking a triangle displays subtopics, just as clicking a triangle in the Finder displays subfolders.
